Unsafe residential compounds under repairs in Nur-Sultan
Dropping tiles, flammable lining and failing elevators: Nur-Sultan launches extensive efforts to repair apartment blocks.
Previously, tenants of Orbita and Territoriya Komforta residential compounds raised the building repairs issue at the meeting with mayor Altay Kulginov. Repair works are now in process at those compounds.
The residents of those compounds noted that they were afraid to go outside on windy days. “We do not let our children in the yard fearing the tiles would drop down on them; there is no fire safety system either; we live in a tinderbox; we want to live in our compounds without fear of a tile falling down on us.”
“This year we will conduct works at scale. The residential compound facades must not threaten the tenants. Orbita and Territoriya Komforta are relatively new compounds, however, tiles come off with wind gusts, and the curtain walls were installed improperly, etc. The repair works are in progress: we are replacing wall claddings, disassembling glass curtains, and are planning to repair the fire alarm and heating system and resolve several other issues,” said Altay Kulginov, mayor of the capital.
Under the housing and utilities sector upgrade program, more than 50 apartment blocks will be repaired along with maintenance and replacements of over 100 elevators this year. Moreover, more than 800 families are to be relocated from unsafe buildings to new homes in 2020.
