Astana residents take an express test for HIV on saliva
According to the official website of capital akimat, express tests allow to expand access to testing of vulnerable groups of the population.
Today, a large-scale action "Know your status" took place in the shopping and entertainment center "Khan Shatyr". The event was initiated by the office of public health and the center for prevention and control of AIDS in Astana.
At present, the office of public health pays great attention to the problems of early diagnosis and treatment of HIV infections.
"Every year, huge funds are allocated for the early diagnosis of HIV infection. To date, about a quarter of the city's population has the opportunity to be tested for HIV every year free of charge. These figures will annually grow", – said the head of the Department of public health of Astana, Kamalian Nadyrov in the campaign "Know your status".
The participants of the event were the first to test new non-invasive rapid tests, which did not require blood sampling, saliva was selected as a material, or rather a smear from the gum, and the test result was ready in 10-15 minutes. The main purpose of the action is to inform the population about the necessity and importance of knowing their status. New ways of expanding and accessing HIV testing are now emerging.
The organizers of the action emphasize that in certain situations the use of rapid tests is more effective, because it allows to expand access to testing of vulnerable groups.
These rapid tests are recommended for wide application and have a number of significant advantages: the patient has the opportunity to get the result in a short time, the tests are easy to perform, easy to interpret, have minimum requirements for storage conditions, do not require the use of equipment.
Since 1997, 1,443 cases of HIV-infected persons have been registered in Astana. Thanks to early diagnosis and availability of testing, more than 84% of people in the capital know their HIV status. As a result of early detection, the mortality rate has been halved.
